Huntsville is the most technically literate buyer in Alabama. Clients here often have engineers who can read a model, sometimes a Python user in the building, and no patience for a dashboard that cannot explain where its numbers came from. That raises the bar in a useful way: the work here is less about producing charts and more about method.
The Huntsville mix
Aerospace and defense set the tone, and the interesting layer for us is the subcontractors and small suppliers around the primes — machine shops, engineering services firms, specialist staffing, software subcontractors. These businesses live on contract performance and utilization, and they answer to customers who audit.
There is also a growing commercial tech and biotech scene around Cummings Research Park, plus the ordinary small business economy that a fast-growing city produces: trades, clinics, restaurants and services all expanding to keep up with population.
What defense subcontractors ask for
Utilization and indirect rates, mostly. If your business bills labor against contracts, the questions are how much of paid time is billable, how actual cost per contract compares to the bid, and which contract types make money once overhead is allocated honestly. That last one is where firms are often surprised.
Timesheet and project data usually exists in detail because contracts require it. The failure is that it only gets used for invoicing, never for management. Turning data you already collect for compliance into a decision tool is one of the cheapest wins available in this market.

For technically capable clients I can go further than a dashboard: demand and workload forecasting, scenario modelling for hiring and bid decisions, and predictive work where the history supports it. My predictive models have landed in the 82–89% accuracy range on comparable problems, and I will tell you plainly when a dataset is too thin to support a model rather than shipping one anyway.
Every model comes with its assumptions, its error rate and its failure modes written down. If your engineers want to pull it apart, the documentation is there for that.
